Parent Information

Erin’s Law, House Bill 6193, became Illinois law in 2013. This legislation requires schools to teach age-appropriate sexual assault and abuse awareness and prevention for grades Pre-K through 12. In Elmhurst, we already have personal safety built into many grade levels’ health education curriculum.  However, after reviewing the requirements of the new legislation, we recognize that our students need additional information and strategies in order to consider past events and prevent future encounters. Our curriculum at each grade level will cover the following:

  • Distinguishing different types of touch
  • Saying “NO”
  • It’s not the child’s fault if someone touches him or her
  • Identifying and telling a trusted adult

This year, an award-winning non-profit group, Imagination Theater, will deliver age-appropriate experiences for our students in 1st through 8th grade. Information about their program, called “No Secrets,” may be found by visiting www.imaginationtheater.org. District 205 will offer live previews of the presentations to parents on Monday, January 26, at Sandburg Middle School as follows: middle school, 6:30 – 7:15 PM and elementary school, 8:00 – 8:45 PM.

Our social workers will visit all of the Early Childhood and Kindergarten classrooms to share age-appropriate read-alouds with students as a part of the Personal Safety Unit that is already in place at our schools.

At York High School, all students will attend separate assemblies led by a Sexual Assault Nurse from Elmhurst Hospital. She will speak on the topic of sexual assault and abuse in personal relationships.

A schedule of assemblies at each school may be found below. Parents have the right to opt their child out of the Erin’s Law lessons and assemblies. To request an opt out for your child, please respond to this email by accessing the following link: http://tinyurl.com/Erin-s-Law-Opt-Out . We will also have paper copies of the opt out form available at the preview night on January 26th.

A response - either electronic or paper form - must be completed by Thursday, February 5, with paper forms submitted to the appropriate school for each child that is being opted out of this State requirement.

Please direct all questions about your school’s lesson(s) or assemblies to your child’s Principal.

Sincerely,

Michelle Fitzgerald, Ed.D.
Assistant Superintendent for Learning & Teaching
Elmhurst School District 205
