Philosophy

Throughout time, the arts have been essential to human existence. When people create and recreate, they discover ways to shape and share thoughts and feelings with others. The arts enrich the quality of life. All students deserve access to the arts through creation, performance, and study. Source: Visual Arts

Arts reach all students at all levels and improve their lives

Elmhurst District 205 is dedicated to developing the artistic talents of its students through a comprehensive K-12 program.

The Arts focus on a variety of media. Visual arts education at the elementary and middle school levels provide all students with hands-on opportunities, developing the skills to enjoy and create visual art. In high school, specialized courses in drawing and painting, digital and traditional photography, ceramics and sculpture, jewelry and metalsmithing, animation, digital design and art history are offered. Courses are sequenced from introductory to advanced levels, including Advanced Placement© programs. Students can expect a nurturing, yet challenging, curriculum that emphasizes not only technical skills, but the creative and theoretical aspects of the arts.

Music education enhances skills in problem solving, communication, teamwork, and the ability to make connections across disciplines. Through music education, students are engaged as active learners, building life skills required to create, perform, and enjoy music.

Students also have opportunity to engage in dramatic arts. York’s theatrical productions have been recognized for excellence by the Illinois High School Theatre Association, and many individual cast members have participated as “all-state” show participants. Students have also been selected for individual recognition by the International Thespian Society.
