Instrumental Music (Band and Orchestra)

Elementary Instrumental Music Description

District 205 Elementary Instrumental Music Program Description

The District 205 Instrumental Music Program at the elementary level includes two components: Instrument Lessons and Ensemble Rehearsals. Attendance at both is required of all students enrolled in band or orchestra. There is a District fee of $30.00 for participation in the program. This fee covers instruction for one school year and does not include the cost of instrument rental, method books, or accessories.

Band and Orchestra Instrument Lessons

Instrument lessons focus on students’ individual musical performance skills. Students enrolled in band or orchestra will attend one 30-minute small-group instrument lesson per week during the regular school day. Students leave their regular academic classes to attend their instrument lessons and are taught in a small group of 2-5 students. During lessons, directors demonstrate and explain instrument-specific concepts and skills, teach students to read standard music notation, and assess each student’s individual progress. Directors will distribute a schedule of lesson times to all students at the beginning of the year.

  • Lessons for Beginning Band and Orchestra students will start the week of September 10, 2018.

Band and Orchestra Ensemble Rehearsals

Ensemble rehearsals focus on group performance. Students rehearse in a Band or Orchestra for 60 minutes one day per week after school at the middle school in their designated attendance area. During ensemble rehearsals, directors teach students to perform together as a large group and prepare music for 2-3 performances per year.  Parents must provide their own transportation or carpool to and from after-school rehearsals. Rehearsals are on Thursdays from 3:30- 4:30 p.m.

  • After school Prep Band and Orchestra rehearsals begin on Thursday, October 18, 2018.

Instruments and Supplies

All band and orchestra students must provide their own instrument, method book, and accessories. (Exceptions are made for students playing some large band instruments.) The cost for these items is separate from the district registration fee. We strongly advise you to review our recommended instrument brands and/or talk to a director before renting or purchasing an instrument. There are many poor quality instruments on the market, often sold on the internet or through discount stores. Many of these inexpensive import instruments, made of cheap materials, do not operate properly and impede student success. Detailed rental information, recommendations for instruments and vendors, and supply lists will be available soon.

Financial Assistance

Elmhurst Music Boosters (emb205.orgmay be able to provide some financial assistance for band and orchestra students who qualify for the free/reduced lunch program. Parents seeking financial assistance for instrument rental must complete an EMB financial assistance application and an instrument rental contract with the instrument vendor.

Middle School Concert Band and Orchestra

Band and Orchestra are co-curricular fine arts course offered to all sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students. The band program offers instruction in woodwind, brass, and concert percussion instruments. The orchestra program offers instruction in the stringed instruments: violin, viola, cello, and bass. Students may choose to be dually-enrolled in either choir and band, or choir and orchestra. Students split their time evenly between the ensembles according to a schedule distributed by the directors.

The middle school program consists of two components: Rehearsals and Technique Classes. Participation in both ensemble rehearsals and technique classes is required of all students enrolled in band and orchestra. 6th Grade ensembles rehearse daily during the school day as an elective period. 7th/8th Grade ensemble rehearsals are held daily before school from 7:30 a.m. - 8:15 a.m.

Instrumental Technique Classes are forty minutes long, held one day per week on a rotating basis during the student's regular daily class schedule. This time is necessary for individual assessment and small group instruction.

It is our goal to prepare each student for the appreciation and performance of music. They will learn music ranging from historically significant works to modern masterpieces. They will also develop their abilities as well-rounded musicians. Each student who has completed this program will be a competent musician with a strong knowledge of fundamentals, terminology, and technical ability. The directors instill an appreciation of music in students that they will in turn pass on to those around them. Students will participate in a variety of performances throughout the school year, including a combined festival, a performance tour to the elementary schools, school assembly performances, and evening performances for the school and community. Students new to the district or interested in beginning an instrument should talk to a District 205 band or orchestra director for ensemble placement prior to enrolling in this course.
