Program Honors York Alumni

In 2012, Elmhurst Community Unit School District 205 launched the York Distinguished Alumni Program.

The Dukes of Distinction award honors exemplary York Community High School graduates who:

  • Display leadership characteristics through achievement of significant and/or extraordinary accomplishments or service
  • Have made an outstanding contribution to society
  • Serve as a positive influence while exemplifying the honored York traditions of teamwork and selflessness
  • Embody the ideals of YCHS and School District 205, therefore bringing pride and prestige to the school, the District and the community

The exemplary alumni who receive the York Distinguished Alumni Award will raise self-expectation among the current students through their realization that these "Dukes of Distinction" once walked the halls of York High School and the streets of this community.

2018 Dukes of Distinction Program

In the fall of 2018, York Community High School will be hosting a Centennial celebration.  The next Dukes of Distinction class will be honored in the fall of 2019.  Nominations will be accepted starting October 1, 2018.

Words of Wisdom

Daniel Burnham, designer of the Chicago’s Columbian Exposition, proclaimed, “Make no little plans. They have no magic to stir men’s blood and probably will not themselves be realized.” Yes, yes, Plans should be great, but they should be allowed to lead to un-planned Plans -- and futures not now dreamed of. Make no little plans, let them stir your blood, but be willing to throw them away.

I’m indebted to York High School on so many levels. The lessons I learned as editor-in-chief of the York-Hi served me well at every newspaper I edited, including USA Today. Sprinting for Joe Newton on the York track team made a scholarship and journalism education possible. And most important, I’m still dating Peggy, the young woman I took to the Girls’ Club dance in 1970. We’ve been married for 37 years.
